OLD Davao: Do you still remember these scenes?

Hello guys! A friend of mine shares these photos of old Davao City from the Facebook Group "Taga-Davao Ka Kung". It really brings back some memories on how things work in the old days and make you say that we gone a long way already. PADAYUN SA PAG-USWAG DAVAO!!!

Do you still remember all of these?

  1. The tall structure (with a Caltex sign across it) is the existing University of Mindanao building at Bolton Street. The old Caltex gasoline station is now the abandoned Gaisano edifice beside Land Bank of the Philippines.

  2. The parade (led by a Coca-cola vehicle) is most likely a shot from the 1976 1st Davao Film Festival organized by Briccio G. Santos, eldest son of former Davao City mayor Luis T. Santos and presently head of the Film Center of the Philippines (2nd Aquino admin). His film entry in that event was 'Manyikang Papel,' arguably the first gay-oriented movie in the country, starring Joseph Sytangco.

  3. Agudo's Photo Shop (just across the Avida Condominium along C.M. Recto Street) was the No. 1 portrait studio in the city in the sixties. Nearly all academic institutions hired it to shoot graduation pictures and other memorable events and gatherings. It is the site (under construction, May 2015) Allied Bank and Philippine Veterans Bank.

  4. Golden Theater (with a movie pic of Fernando Poe Jr. on billboard) is one of the four cinema houses starting with letter 'G' which the Garcia family owned in the seventies. The building still exists at corner Ilustre and San Pedro streets. The other 'G' movie houses were Garmon, Galaxy and Garnet.

    1. "Garmon" stood for Garcia and Monteverde, since the family matriarch was Milagros Monteverde-Garcia.

  5. The old PTA Stadium was also known as the Palaruang Panlungsod. It has since been demolished and converted into People's Park.
